Over-the-Ear

The most common type of hearing aid is an OTE style. This means that a majority of the electronic components exist on the top or just over the top of the ear, with a minority of the components being inside the ear canal. This is often achieved with a small speaker in the ear canal with either a custom mold or an appropriately sized and chosen soft earbud. Our office offers brand-name options, making them a more discreet option that comes in various colors to help blend into hair and skin color; you can also get creative with more ‘fashion’ colors, if preferred. They offer a high level of sound amplification, which can be adjusted to meet individual needs and preferences, effectively treating mild to profound levels of impairment. They offer many advanced features like noise reduction and wireless connectivity to devices like smartphones, televisions, and other audio streaming sources through Bluetooth technology. Many of these options are also rechargeable, eliminating the need to carry batteries. This style has become increasingly popular, striking an ideal balance between size, functionality, and performance and is the most common style worn by hearing aid users (over 80%).

Custom Hearing Aids

There are a number of reasons why a custom-style hearing aid option would be appealing – nothing competing for space on top of the ear, the patient prefers an all-in-one component option, or they just like the looks of it! This style is an ideal option for patients who cannot wear something over their ear (think oxygen line already over the ear or issues with a tightly pinned outer ear). The range in sizes with the custom hearing aid options is directly related to the size and anatomy of the person’s ear canal. These options offer many of the same benefits as Over-the-Ear styles, but may or may not be able to offer directional microphones, Bluetooth connectivity or accessory connectivity, or rechargeability – These are all dependent on the size of the ear canal and what components will be able to fit internally. While this style is less popular with the general public, it is a favorite of patients when it’s a good fit.

Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

In 2022, the Food and Drug Administration finalized its rules governing the sale of a new category of medical devices—called over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids. This provided adults living in the United States with the option to purchase certain hearing aids directly—without first visiting a hearing care professional for a hearing evaluation and a hearing aid fitting, among other health care services. While OTC hearing aids are widely available at lower costs, they are not right for everyone. You must be 18 years or older to wear OTC hearing aids; children should never wear them. Individuals with cognitive or dexterity issues may not be suitable candidates for OTC hearing aids and should seek a consultation with an audiologist for hearing loss management. All OTC devices are self-fitting or require some measure of technological know-how to implement the fitting process. If this is a concern for you, OTC devices may not be right for you. Our hearing care providers will be able to tell you whether an OTC device may be a good solution for you and can even make recommendations regarding which option might be best.
